1973: Over 5,000 people attended Tucumcari’s Independence Day fireworks display that was held on the night of July 3.

The day included a kids rodeo and roping at the Quay County Rodeo Arena. Levi and Johnny Garcia won the team roping title, and Jack Copeland won the individual roping title.

The Cowboy Club also served a beef barbecue dinner to about 400 people.

In Logan, an estimated 2,000 people attended the first-ever Ute Lake Fourth of July Fiesta. Kathy Feerer was crowned by Mayor Robert McFarland at the Fiesta Queen.

— A 45-year-old Albuquerque man who was visiting family in Tucumcari drowned in the swimming pool of the Circle S Motel. The victim’s wife heard him call for help and tried to throw him a life preserver, but he couldn’t reach it. A Michigan man jumped into the pool, pulled him out and performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation but failed to revive him.

— A state policeman doused 140 pounds of seized marijuana with diesel fuel and set it ablaze at the city dump. The pot had been confiscated during the arrest and conviction of four men.

— The Quay County Clerk’s Office announced as of June 15, a couple no longer is required to wait three days for marriage after getting their license. Blood tests and doctor’s certificates still are required before a couple can apply.

— Jack’s Upholstery reported that someone with a .25-caliber automatic firearm shot out four plate glass windows of the business between midnight and 9 a.m.
