Little League softball team to compete at district for first time

The Quay County Little League All-Stars fast-pitch softball team will compete in its first-ever postseason during the District 4 Tournament starting Saturday at Las Vegas.

The Quay County squad of 9- to 11-year-old girls will face the winner of the Las Vegas vs. La Plaza clash. Quay County earned a first-round bye in the double-elimination tournament.

The local team is scheduled to play at 10 a.m. Saturday at La Plaza Little League field at 1308 Grant St. in Las Vegas.

The district championship game will be played at 4 p.m. Monday, June 19.

Quay County coach Jakus Martinez is the coach. His squad is comprised of four area fast-pitch teams, with the nucleus from his Lady Tigers team that finished 10-2 during the regular season.

“We’re excited to compete in district for the first time,” he said. “We’ll see how it goes.”

Members of the team are Zalaynee Marquez, Alexis Guillen, Annaliah Vargas, Kimberly Gardea, Heaven Montoya and Gianna Aragon of the Lady Tigers; Amani Jimenez and McKenzie Garcia of the Bulldogs; Kanyan Cox, Ambree Bass and Quinn Terry of Logan; and Mila Ray, Sutton Fought and Amaya Vargas of the Sooners.

The assistant coaches are Matthew Guillen and Dimitri Chappell.
