1973: The Tucumcari Board of Education during a meeting Monday accepted the new cafeteria building, constructed by Currell Lumber Co. of Tucumcari.
They were given a tour of the new facility by architect Kern Smith of Carlsbad. Despite a few minor flaws or malfunctions in equipment and construction that were due to be fixed, the board felt the building met specifications.
The cafeteria includes four serving lines, two tray-return lines and hideaway seating that can accommodate up to 600 people.
The board also accepted a change order of $870.74, bringing the total cost of the cafeteria to $221,734.74.
— Several new state traffic laws took effect, including all drivers and passengers on motorcycles must wear safety helmets. Previously, only children under 18 years old were required to wear helmets.
— Two local men suffered minor injuries when the pickup truck they were riding in was struck by a train at a crossing one mile east and one mile north of the KOA Campground. The truck sustained a crooked bed from the accident.
— Sands Dorsey offered a variety of gifts for Father’s Day, including portable bar sets, liquor dispensers, binoculars, thermometers, aftershaves, colognes, manicure sets, Water Piks, Timex watches and shoeshine kits.
— The Odeon Theatre was screening the U.S. marshal saga, “Cahill,” starring John Wayne.
