Tucumcari will host its first slow-pitch co-ed softball event since 2019 with the B’s Crew Softball Summer Tournament this weekend.
Organizer Brenda Lopez said at least five teams are signed up for the tourney, with another one or two possibly signing up before brackets are set Tuesday, after the Quay County Sun’s deadline.
Lopez said as it stands, it likely will be a one-day event, with the first pitch at 8 a.m. Saturday at the diamond just off South 14th Street.
She said the teams are all Tucumcari-based, but with players hailing from Amarillo, Albuquerque and even Colorado.
The B’s Crew Softball Summer Tournament is slated to receive about $2,600 in lodgers tax promotional funds to help defray expenses for the event.
A co-ed softball event happened each summer or fall in Tucumcari until it was put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lopez said she hopes to make it an annual event again.
“We just wanted to get out and play again,” she said.
The tournament will host four food stands. The top teams will receive varying prizes, ranging from a pint glass to a duffel bag and hoodie for the first-place team.
Organizers also will hand out bat bags to the Most Valuable Player, male and female, of the tournament.
