Quay County's sheriff on Monday honored one of his deputies for potentially life-saving actions after an accident on Interstate 40 last month.
During Monday's meeting of the Quay County Commission, Sheriff Dennis Garcia gave deputy Tyler Davis a Life Saving Award certificate and pin he can wear on his uniform.
Davis was the first law-enforcement officer on the scene of a crash of two commercial vehicles on I-40 east of Tucumcari on May 24.
Garcia said Davis found a male passenger on the ground, surrounded by a motorist who was providing aid.
"Deputy Davis recognized the potential of a life-threatening injury to the male passenger's arm and immediately applied a tourniquet," Garcia said.
"Deputy Davis' ability to arrive on a chaotic scene, assess what needed to be done and take the proper action has earned him the Quay County Sheriff's Office Life Saving Award."
The sheriff said Undersheriff Russell Shafer brought Tyler's acts to his attention.
Garcia also noted Davis is an instructor in tactical medicine and the Stop the Bleed program.
"The trainings pay off, and I'm really proud of you," he said to Davis.
