Serving the High Plains
A group of women based in Forrest recently gave a Quilt of Valor to a San Jon native for his long service in the U.S. Air Force.
The Forrest Everybody's Club, affiliated with the Quay County Extension Service, is a group of woman that has been meeting continually since the 1930s.
This year, they made a Quilt of Valor for Col. J. Corey Reed, who grew up in San Jon and graduated from New Mexico State University. Quilts of Valor is a national organization that presents quilts, usually in a patriotic style, to American soldiers in recognition of their service and sacrifice.
Members of Forrest Everybody's Club went to Desert Rose Center in Tucumcari and bought red, white and blue fabric. They cut it into "fat quarters" and distributed the fabric to members with instructions to make two or three 12-inch quilt blocks.
When they reconvened, they sewed their blocks together. Pattye Austin of Grady quilted it as a donation to the Quilts of Valor organization as a gesture of appreciation for Reed's service. Reed was presented the quilt on May 15.
In 2002, Reed completed undergraduate pilot training at Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi. He completed squadron officer school at Maxwell AFB in Alabama in 2007. He earned a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering in 2011 from NMSU. He also is a distinguished graduate with a Master's of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania.
Colonel Reed is vice commander of the 452nd Air Mobility Wing, Air Force Reserve Command at March Air Reserve Base California. As Vice Commander of the Air Force Reserve's largest wing with more than 4,000 personnel, nine C-17A Globemaster III aircraft and 14 KC-135R Stratotanker tanker aircraft, he directs the support of worldwide airlift and air refueling operations.
Reed is also responsible for the daily operations of March, which supports active duty, National Guard and reserve tenants from all branches of the military and the Department of Homeland Security.
