1973: Residents of Conchas Dam gave up on the idea of leaving San Miguel County for Quay County during a meeting at the Conchas Lodge.
Noting Conchas Dam was 32 miles from Tucumcari and 75 miles from Las Vegas, residents had felt they were too far from San Miguel County’s seat for effective governance.
Moving the town to another county would have required the unlikely approval of San Miguel County voters.
Members of 150 people in a local group called Citizens Committee for Better Government had wanted the change, but the idea reportedly “fizzled out” after they were informed what was required.
— A total of 135 seniors were set to graduate from Tucumcari High School on Friday. A total of 18 seniors, including valedictorian Sherry Buxton, graduated from San Jon High School on Tuesday.
— Law enforcement in Clayton, Santa Rosa and Clovis were on the lookout for three suspects who stole $235 from the register of the West Fina Truck Stop in Tucumcari. They were believed to have stolen it while an attendant was busy servicing another vehicle.
