A Texas man died in a crash last week on Interstate 40 east of Tucumcari.
Diego Ignacio Castro Serrito, 18, of Fort Worth was declared dead at the scene by the Office of Medical Examiner.
According to a news release from New Mexico State Police, the accident occurred at milepost 354 of the interstate about 9:30 p.m. May 1.
Serrito was driving west on I-40 in an International box truck.
“For unknown reasons, the International left the roadway and collided with the rear of a 2024 Volvo tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder,” the release stated. “Serrito was ejected from the vehicle onto the roadway and then struck by a 2019 Freightliner tractor-trailer.”
The drivers of the Volvo and Freightliner were not injured.
Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in this crash, state police stated, but Serrito did not appear to have been properly wearing a seatbelt. The crash is being investigated.
