Logan baseball squad improves to 15-0 against Cimarron

Logan’s defending state-champ baseball team stayed undefeated with a doubleheader sweep — including a no-hitter — over district foe Cimarron on Thursday.

Logan improved to 15-0 overall and 6-0 in district play, taking a two-game lead in the district standings over rival Melrose (8-3, 4-2).

The Longhorns blanked the Rams in the first game by a 16-0 score in five innings, then fended off a late rally by their foes in a 10-5 victory during the second game.

In the first game, Brock Burns earned the no-hit victory, striking out 13 while walking four in five innings.

Park Strong drove in five runs for the Longhorns on a triple and a home run. Izaiah Kneitz, Aydin Kotara and Kaeden Stoner each totaled two RBI as Logan pounded 13 hits.

In the second game, Logan surged to a 10-1 lead after five innings. Cimarron scored four runs in the seventh to make it interesting before the Longhorns secured the win.

Strong, Kotara and Kneitz combined on the mound for seven strikeouts, four walks and three hits allowed. Logan committed six errors, leading to all five of Cimarron’s runs being unearned.

Burns went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, one homer and three RBI. Kotara and Diego Sanchez each drove in two runs.

Cimarron fell to 5-7 overall, 1-5 in district play.

Logan 11, Melrose 0

The Longhorns broke a scoreless tie by scoring five runs in the fourth inning and six in the fifth as Logan ace Stoner threw a no-hitter against district foe Melrose last Monday.

Stoner struck out nine and walked one in the five-inning victory.

Kotara and Sanchez each drove in three runs for Logan.

The Longhorns collected 10 hits, four walks and two hit batsmen off Melrose pitchers Mike Cardonita and Dathan Yeary.

Melrose, which advanced to the Class 1A semifinals last season before falling the Logan, dropped to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in district play.
