Two area players earn second-team all-state honors

Two area basketball players earned second-team all-state honors form the New Mexico High School Coaches Association. Three others were honorable mentions.

Tucumcari senior point guard Alexus Lafferty took second-team honors in Class 3A girls basketball. She averaged a team-high 15.1 points, 3.4 assists and 3.7 steals per game for the 20-7 Lady Rattlers, which advanced to the state quarterfinals before losing to eventual champion Tohatchi.

Brock Burns, a junior point guard at Logan, earned second-team honors in Class 1A boys basketball. Burns averaged a team-high 13.5 points and 3.7 assists per game for the 18-12 Longhorns that advanced to the state quarterfinals.

Tucumcari senior guard Curtis Gonzales took honorable mention honors in Class 3A boys basketball. He was the top scorer on a Rattlers squad that earned a berth in the state tournament and lost to eventual state champ St. Michael’s.

Tucumcari sophomore guard Caylee Benavidez earned honorable mention honors in Class 3A girls basketball. She averaged 11 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game and led the squad with 34 blocked shots.

Logan freshman guard Desta Rose earned honorable mention in Class 1A girls basketball. Rose was one of the Lady Longhorns’ top scorers on a 17-12 team that earned a berth in the state tournament.
