Four Lady Rattlers named all-district

The district-champion Tucumcari girls basketball team boasted four players on the all-district team and three honorable mentions.

Three players from Logan earned all district honors in District A-6.

Making the first team in District 3A-4 for the Lady Rattlers were senior guard Alexus Lafferty, sophomore guard July Lafferty, sophomore guard Caylee Benavidez and freshman power forward Kyla Lopez.

Alexus Lafferty led the Lady Rattlers in points (15.1 per game), assists (3.4) and steals (3.9).

Benavidez was second in points (11.0) and assists (3.0), third in rebounds (4.4) and led the team in blocked shots (1.4).

July Lafferty averaged 7.9 points per game and led the team in rebounds (5.6).

Lopez averaged 7.2 points per game and was second in rebounds (4.5).

Honorable mentions for Tucumcari were junior guard Alexis Ramirez (1.2 rebounds per game), junior guard Haisley Huffman (2.3 steals per game) and eighth-grade forward Cambree Benavidez (8.7 points per game).

Tucumcari went 20-7 on the season, including nine wins in a row at one point, and was unbeaten in district play. The Lady Rattlers advanced to the Class 3A quarterfinals before being eliminated by eventual state champion Tohachi.

For the Lady Longhorns, freshman guard Desta Rose, junior guard Hailee Robertson and junior guard Lizzy Horner each earned first-team all-district honors.

Logan finished 17-12 overall and finished in a tie for second with Fort Sumner in its district during the regular season. The Lady Longhorns qualified for the playoffs but lost in the first round to Springer.

Melrose, which won the district title, made it to the Class 1A semifinals before losing.

Honorable mentions for Logan were junior power forward Natalie Bongers, junior power forward Camryn Cantrell and junior power forward Laramee Shields.
