Logan earns sixth seed in 1A tournament

The Logan volleyball team earned a No. 6 seed in the Class 1A state tournament and will face 11th-seeded Alamo Navajo in the first round on Thursday morning.

The Lady Longhorns (15-7) play the Cougars (16-5) at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Rio Rancho High School.

The winner of that match takes on third-seeded Animas (19-2), which has a first-round bye, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Rio Rancho High.

The semifinals and championship of the double-elimination tournament are scheduled for Saturday at the Rio Rancho Events Center. The final is set for 3 p.m.

Melrose (23-0), one of Logan’s district rivals, earned the top seed in the tournament. The Lady Buffaloes have lost only two sets all season and have advanced to the finals eight straight times.

Gateway Christian (22-1) was the second seed, its only loss a four-set decision to Melrose. Legacy Academy (21-2) is the fourth seed.

One of Logan’s district rivals, Fort Sumner-House (11-11), earned a seventh seed. MaxPreps.com rated their schedule as the toughest in Class 1A this season.

Another nearby team, Roy-Mosquero (18-6), earned a No. 10 seed.

Other teams that made the cut for the 1A tournament are Quemado, Santa Fe Waldorf, Springer and Ramah.

According to the New Mexico Activities Association, seedings were determined by finish during regular-season district play, MaxPreps.com rankings, overall record, wins against district champions, member-school input and head-to-head play.
