Familiar face appointed to Logan school board

The Logan Municipal Schools board last week unanimously appointed a new member last week who is a familiar face.

The board during an Oct. 3 special meeting appointed Tom Humble, who served on the board for 12 years before losing re-election last year, to replace the recently resigned Scott Osborn.

Two candidates sent letters of interest to the board to fill the seat, but superintendent Dennis Roch stated in an email the other applicant withdrew hours before the meeting.

As a result, Roch said last Monday’s meeting lasted less than a minute.

“Fastest board meeting anyone can remember,” he wrote.

Humble was scheduled to be sworn into office during the board’s regular meeting on Oct. 10. (The meeting was after the Quay County Sun’s deadline.) He will serve through the next board election in November 2023, which would decide who would fill the remaining two years of Osborn’s term.

Humble said despite his re-election defeat last year, he continued to attend school board meetings in the gallery.

“I still have a sharp interest in the welfare of our school district,” Humble said in a telephone interview Wednesday. “Hopefully, with my experience, I’ll be a useful member.”

Osborn, who represented Position 4, was re-elected last year but resigned last month because he is moving to Dalhart, Texas. He had served on the board for nine years and was a board president for a time.

Humble said he likely would run next year to fill the remainder of Osborn’s term.

In November 2021, Humble lost his re-election bid for the board’s Position 5 to Toby Jon Willis, who earned 58% of the vote.

Humble said there wouldn’t be any friction serving on a board with his former election rival.

“He and I talked about it when he ran … He wasn’t running against me; he was running for the school board,” he said. “There never was any animosity whatsoever.

“As far as I’m concerned, Toby’s an excellent board member. I’m looking forward to working with him.”
