The Logan football team bounced back after a tough road loss the previous week with a 56-6 non-district victory Friday over visiting Mesilla Valley Christian in eight-man football action.
The Longhorns (4-1) raced to a 14-0 lead after one quarter and commanded a 34-6 advantage over the SonBlazers (1-3) at halftime.
The game was halted early in the third quarter due to the mercy rule after the Longhorns scored three quick touchdowns.
The Longhorns were looking for a better performance after a slew of turnovers led to a 32-20 non-district loss at Magdalena.
Logan coach Dwayne Roberts had no complaints about his team after Friday.
“We looked really, really good — no turnovers,” he said in a phone interview Sunday. “We talked about it all week and stressed the importance of taking care of the ball.”
Roberts also praised his defense, which came close to earning a shutout.
“We did give up one touchdown late in the second quarter, and we were trying some different things on defense,” he said. “We had a kid slip on a pass; that was the only reason they scored. Other than that, we were pretty locked down.”
Roberts didn’t have his statistics from the game compiled Sunday, but he recalled Christian Kotara scoring two touchdowns, plus Park Strong, Devin Kotara and Kaeden Stoner each adding TDs.
Logan travels to Dulce (1-2) for a non-district game at 7 p.m. Friday. Dulce lost to Questa 63-30 during the Hawks’ last game on Sept. 10. Logan defeated Questa 50-0 on Aug. 26.
After that, the Longhorns begin their rugged district schedule with successive games against unbeaten Clayton, unbeaten Fort Sumner-House, at Melrose and at Tatum.
