Turnovers doom Longhorns at Magdalena

Turnovers — especially in the fourth quarter — doomed Logan during a 32-20 loss Friday at non-district foe Magdalena during eight-man football action.

The Longhorns, ranked fifth in the latest coaches poll, suffered their first loss of the season and fell to 3-1.

Magdalena, ranked sixth, improved to 3-1.

Kaeden Stoner scored two touchdowns for Logan, and teammate Bill DeLuca added another TD.

Both teams battled to a 20-20 tie early in the fourth quarter before the Steers broke through.

“We had a few too many turnovers in the whole game,” Logan coach Dwayne Roberts said. “We probably had double-digit turnovers. The turnovers were the difference in the game, by far. If we don’t turn the ball over, we win.

“It was a good game … pretty much what I expected,” he added. “It was a battle. We played defensively pretty well. We just shot ourselves in the foot a little bit. We had too many mishaps on offense.”

He said that included several fumbles or interceptions in his opponents’ red zone.

Roberts said one of his players also dropped a wide-open touchdown pass in the third quarter that would have given Logan the lead.

“They got the ball back and scored twice, and we didn’t respond,” he said.

It was the second straight week the Longhorns committed too many turnovers. They totaled six during a 54-14 win over Menaul.

“We’ll do some drills (in practice) to hopefully solve some of that,” Roberts said.

Logan hosts Mesilla Valley Christian at 7 p.m. Friday. The SonBlazers (1-2) defeated Menaul 40-28 on Friday.
