1972: Wells Fargo announced a plan to build a $2.5 million to $3 million motel complex just east of the KOA Campground off U.S. 66.

Each of the two motel buildings will comprise of 175 to 180 units with a central shopping center and eating facility, banquet rooms, convention rooms and a plastic dome-covered courtyard with a pool and recreational facilities. The motels also have a separate facility for horses and animals, along with a veterinary clinic.

Construction was expected to begin in six months.

• Tucumcari’s Urban Development Board chose a new downtown plan that would have a closed mall on Main Street between First and Second streets. Main still would be open between First and Adams streets and between Second and Third streets. The board also voted to rescind the previous downtown plan approved in October 1971.

• It was determined that Buena Vista School was indeed within city limits. At a previous city commission meeting, there was a question whether the city was responsible for the school’s fire protection. The school officially was annexed into the city in 1967.
