1972: Ellen Peabody, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Peabody, was crowned Pinata Queen by the 1971 queen, Kim Evetts, during a pageant at the Tucumcari Convention Center on Lake Street. A sellout crowd of more than 600 people attended the ceremony. A total of 19 girls competed for the crown.

• A 6-year-old Tucumcari girl was hospitalized after being knocked down by a car on East Tucumcari Boulevard. She was listed in fair condition at Trigg Memorial Hospital.

• Pete Domenici, a candidate for U.S. Senate, was scheduled to be at the Quay County Fair for about two hours to greet possible future constituents.

• Southern Union was advertising a Speed Queen clothes dryer for $204.95 and matching washer for $239.95. With a purchase, it was offering a free Pomerantz carving board.

• The Holiday Inn in Tucumcari was advertising its Mexican Matador Buffet Extravaganza on Saturdays for $3 a person or $2.50 for children younger than 12.
