Cannabis sales hit record level of more than $40 million in July in New Mexico, and Tucumcari saw record numbers, as well.
A news release Thursday from a spokeswoman for Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham stated July sales numbers surpassed every previous month since legal recreational marijuana sales began on April 1.
It stated New Mexico’s adult-use cannabis sales totaled nearly $23.5 million in July, with medical marijuana sale at $16.8 million that month.
Tucumcari’s sales in July totaled over $352,000, also a record. About $297,500 of that came in adult-use purchases and $55,000 in medical-use sales.
Tucumcari’s previous total sales peak was $255,000 in May.
At least seven marijuana dispensaries are operating in Tucumcari, with more planned.
Logan also showed more robust sales figures in July, with total sales of about $25,500. About $20,000 of that was for adult use. Logan totaled $10 in marijuana sales in June.
A cannabis retail license also has been approved for the far eastern Quay County border town of Glenrio, according to the state’s Cannabis Control Division database, but that shop is not yet operating.
Total sales numbers for other eastern New Mexico municipalities in July:
• Clayton, $178,726.80;
• Clovis, $1.165 million;
• Fort Sumner, $34,975.25;
• Hobbs, $1.622 million;
• Portales, $336,461.60;
• Tatum, $48,224.18;
• Texico, $72,698.78.
New Mexico’s population centers of Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Cruces, Hobbs and Rio Rancho saw the highest July sales numbers.
“These numbers show that the impressive sales generated in the first month of legalized recreational cannabis sales were no fluke, and this is only the beginning,” Lujan Grisham stated. “We’ve established a new industry that is already generating millions of dollars in local and state revenue and will continue to generate millions more in economic activity across the state, creating thousands of jobs for New Mexicans in communities both small and large.”
