1972: Tucumcari’s Independence Day fireworks display originally scheduled for July 3 was postponed because of rain. It was rescheduled to 9:30 p.m. July 5, but the Burkett Fireworks Company of Enid, Oklahoma, began the show an hour early because of falling rain and the fear of heavier precipitation later. The show lasted about 40 minutes.

• Lawrence Ingram, chairman of the Tucumcari Industrial Commission, called a special meeting to discuss the possibility of opening a market for local handicrafts in Tucumcari. An official with the state’s Department of Development cited similar markets in Albuquerque and Taos, and he suggested the city form an arts and crafts association for one of its own.

• Lloyd Hawkins, former owner and operator of KTNM radio in Tucumcari from 1951 to 1960, stopped in town to visit old friends. Hawkins now runs a radio station in Edinburg, Texas, and is the town’s mayor.

• The Odeon Theatre was screening a John Wayne film, “The Cowboys.” “He gave them their chance to be men,” the movie ad read.
