1972: Tucumcari school officials opened bids to build a new high school cafeteria to replace one destroyed by fire. Among the seven bidders, Forrest Currell Co. of Tucumcari submitted the low bid of $226,134, which was accepted. Officials hope the new cafeteria will be completed by late December.
• Donations were being accepted by First National Bank for the Robert Curtiss family who lost their home and belongings in a fire. Nine-year-old Donna Curtiss was released from the hospital after being treated for burns, and another family member still was hospitalized.
• Richard Reid, Alvin Cawthon and Robert E. Johnson each were honored for more than 20 years of full-time service for the New Mexico Army National Guard in Tucumcari.
• The Canal Drive-In was showing a triple-feature of Clint Eastwood movies — “Beguiled,” “Play Misty for Me” and “Coogan’s Bluff.” The Odeon Theatre was screening “Red Sun,” starring Charles Bronson, Ursula Andres and Toshiro Mifune.
