Serving the High Plains
Genesis Garden Homestead on Saturday morning hosted a showcase of locally produced food and other products - the first of what will be monthly events at the north Tucumcari farm.
Sally Baker, co-owner of Genesis Garden with her husband Darrell, and several other co-organizers invited about a dozen vendors to the farm with the hope of informing more Tucumcari residents about what is locally available even before the Tucumcari Farmers Market opens in July,
"We've got so much more than Tucumcari realizes," she said. "People don't even know there's anything outside of the grocery store and farmers market. A lot of us have stuff year-round."
Several tables on Saturday displayed the usual suspects of fresh-picked produce and plants. Another offered locally produced beef, another offered fresh eggs, and another offered bath salts.
Baker also was running a charity bake sale, with proceeds going to victims of the massive Calf Canyon-Hermit's Peak wildfire in northern New Mexico.
Baker said she obtained a New Mexico Farmers Marketing Association farm stand membership. In addition to produce, Genesis Garden also offers cheese from Tucumcari Mountain Cheese Co.
The next event Genesis Garden will host is a "Conversations About Soil Health" circle talk from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 17. Those wishing to participate should RSVP to Marie Nava by June 15 by calling (303) 834-0876 or emailing [email protected].
Genesis Garden Homestead is at 3030 N. Rock Island St., nearly two miles north of East Main Street in Tucumcari.
