1972: Lee Francis, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, attended a Dutch-treat dinner in his honor at the Pow Wow Restaurant in Tucumcari. Francis, citing big losses during the 1970 election, said the only way Republicans can be elected in New Mexico is unity in the party and convincing independent voters to cast their ballots for GOP candidates.
• D.H. Williams, New Mexico State University agronomist, said water in Conchas Lake and the Canadian River were running low and that farmers in the Tucumcari irrigation project were allotted only 0.75 acre-feet of water per farm, though they need 1 to 2 feet for normal production.
• The Tucumcari Municipal Golf Course hosted nearly 50 women from New Mexico and Texas for the Ladies Golf Tournament. Sandy Rogers of Las Vegas won the event by shooting an 86. Another 40 women competed in a bridge tournament at the country club.
• The Odeon Theatre was screening “The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid,” a western about outlaws Cole Younger and Jesse James starring Cliff Robertson. The Canal Drive-In was screening two Spanish-language films, “La Maldicion de la Llorona” and “El Tunco Maclovio.”
