Serving the High Plains
The Logan baseball team earned a No. 2 seed in the Class 1A state tournament and will face district rival and third-seeded Melrose in a semifinal Friday.
Meanwhile, Tucumcari’s softball team earned a ninth-seed in the Class 3A tournament and will play eighth-seeded Zuni in a play-in game Wednesday.
The Longhorns, 18-3 and the defending Class 1A champion, will play the Buffaloes (10-7) at 3 p.m. Friday at Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho.
Logan won two of three games against Melrose this season.
The winner of that game will face the winner of top-seeded Gateway Christian (14-4) versus fourth-seed Mesilla Valley Christian (2-9) for the championship at noon Saturday at Santa Ana Star Field at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
If Gateway Christian advances as expected, that might set up a rematch of last year’s title game. The Longhorns won 16-7 for their first-ever baseball state title.
The SonBlazers won two of three games against the Longhorns this season and captured their district with a perfect 9-0 mark.
In softball, Tucumcari (13-11) earned its second playoff berth in four years. Zuni (15-7), which the Lady Rattlers did not play during the regular season, tied with Navajo Prep for the top record of its district with a 9-1 mark.
Tucumcari and Zuni play each other at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cleveland High School.
The winner of that game would face top-seeded Robertson (21-4) at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Cleveland High.
The championship rounds of the double-elimination tournament would be played Thursday at Rio Rancho High School.
The title game or games would be Friday at the University of New Mexico.
