13 Logan entrants win district titles

Logan’s track teams captured 13 district titles and qualified 27 athletes to this week’s state meet at the District 6/A meet Saturday at Fort Sumner.

Melrose took home both boys and girls team titles at Fort Sumner and appear to be the favorite for this week’s Class 1A championships. Both Logan teams finished runner-up.

Logan coach Robert Young didn’t seem too disappointed his teams finished behind the rival Buffs.

“We got a lot of kids in we needed to for state,” he said. “We did about as good as we could do there. We just didn’t have the numbers to go against Melrose. They got the numbers, and they got speed, too.”

In girls competition, Logan’s Sierra Horne took home a district title in the 400-meter dash in 1 minute, 5.54 seconds and qualified for state in the 200-meter dash by finishing second in 0:28.54 and second in the long jump with an effort of 15 feet, 4 inches.

Haylie Bidegan of Logan won a district title in the girls 800-meter run in a time of 2:38.54.

Logan’s Desta Rose came in first in the 1,600-meter run in 6:26.44.

Reece Goldston of Logan won the girls javelin with a throw of 93 feet.

Logan’s 400-meter relay girls team of Horne, Kaylee Williams, Goldston and Rose crossed the finish line first in a time of 0:53.24.

The Lady Longhorns’ 800-meter relay team of Horne, Williams, Goldston and Rose finished first in 1:52.84.

The Logan girls’ 3,200-meter relay team of Natalie Bongers, Laramee Shields, Goldston and Camryn Cantrell won in a time of 12:45.94.

In boys competition, Logan’s Haden Judd won two individual events and qualified for state in another. He won district titles in the 100-meter dash (0:11.54) and 300-meter hurdles race (0:43.04). He also finished second in the long jump with an effort of 19-1 1/2. He also was part of a winning relay team.

Logan’s Christian Kotara took home a district crown by winning the 400-meter dash in 0:53.94.

Devin Kotara of Logan won the 1,600-meter run in 5:44.54.

Logan’s Brock Burns of Logan won the boys javelin with a throw of 121-10.

The Longhorns’ 1,600-meter relay team of Diego Sanchez, Payson Nials, Judd and Christian Kotara won district with an effort of 3:44.04.

Other Logan athletes who qualified for the state meet:

• Aydin Kotara, second place, boys 100-meter dash, 0:12.14, and second place, boys 200-meter dash, 0:24.54;

• Christopher Lucero, second place, boys 3,200-meter run, 13:09.84;

• Burns, Mitchell Wall, Hayden Bruhn and Devin Kotara, second place, boys 3,200-meter relay, 10:45.24;

• Robert Evans, second place, boys discus, 100-0;

• Kaylee Williams, second place, girls 100-meter dash, 0:13.44, and second place, girls high jump, 4-8;

• Bidegain, Goldston, Bongers and Mylee Stone, second place, girls 1,600-meter sprint medley, 5:10.04.

In the team standings, the Buffaloes earned 154 1/2 points, while Logan finished second with 133 1/2 points. The Lady Buffs earned 177 points, and the Lady Longhorns finished runner-up with 135 points.

The San Jon girls team earned eight points at the district meet and had one athlete qualify for state: Alexa Becerra, who finished second in the 300-meter hurdles in 1:00.14.

The Class 1A Track and Field Championships will be Friday and Saturday at the UNM Track-Soccer Complex in Albuquerque.
