LOGAN – The Logan girls and boys teams performed well at the EPAC Varsity Meet, but district rival Melrose performed better.
The Buffaloes and Lady Buffaloes took team titles during the nine-team meet Saturday, solidifying their positions as state-championship contenders in Class 1A.
The Melrose girls dominated the meet with 170 points, far outpacing runner-up Logan's 111 points. Melrose was paced by sprinter Jayda Brittenum, who won two events and finished second in another; and Graci Odom, who won two hurdles events and the pole vault.
The winners for the Lady Longhorns were:
• Haylie Bidegain, who won the 800-meter run in 2:53.09;
• Kaylee Williams, who won the high jump in 4 feet, 8 inches;
• Reece Goldston, who won the javelin throw in 87 feet, 9 inches;
• Logan's 400-meter relay team, which won in 0:55.4.
For the boys, Melrose edged Texico 134-116 in total team points, while Logan was third with 96. The Buffaloes piled up points by winning four of five relay races.
Logan star athlete Hayden Judd won the 100-meter dash (11 seconds flat), 200-meter dash (0:22.99) and 300-meter hurdles (0:42.79).
Logan's Izaiah Kneitz won the triple jump with an effort of 36 feet, 7 inches. The Longhorns also won the 1,600-meter relay in 3:45.56.
Severe winds swept over the meet. According to the National Weather Service station at Tucumcari Municipal Airport, sustained winds of more than 30 mph and gusts of more than 50 mph were recorded.
"I thought (our teams) battled the conditions pretty good and had several positive results against some great EPAC competition," Logan coach Robert Young said.
Other teams at the meet included Fort Sumner, Elida, Texico, Dora, Grady, House and Floyd.
Logan will go to Fort Sumner this week for its district meet.
Santa Rosa Invite
With two individual winners, the Tucumcari girls track team finished third at the 16-team Santa Rosa Invitational on Friday.
The Lady Rattlers finished with 36 points, behind only runner-up East Mountain's 41 points and meet champion Santa Rosa's 67.
Alexus Lafferty of Tucumcari won the javelin throw with an effort of 105 feet, 5 inches in the finals. Teammate Elena Gutierrez also won the 100-meter hurdles race in 19.64 seconds.
Tucumcari's 1,600-meter relay team of Gutierrez, Kylie Ann Rincones, Riley Knapp and Caylee Benavidez also took home a title with an effort of 4:46.84, beating runner-up Santa Rosa by more than 10 seconds.
In boys competition, Andrew Henderson-Clark was the only entrant from Tucumcari who won a title. He threw the javelin 137 feet, 3 inches.
The Santa Rosa boys dominated the meet with 106 points. Tucumcari finished fifth with 22 1/2 points.
Other teams at the meet were Pecos, Pojoaque, Clayton, Mosquero, Raton, Legacy Academy, Menaul, Des Moines, Laguna-Acoma, Maxwell, Chesterton Academy, Melrose, Vaughn and Jemez Valley.
In a change of location, it also was announced Tucumcari will host the Class 3A-4 district meet instead of Roswell, with action beginning at 3 p.m. Friday at Rattler Stadium.
