Serving the High Plains
The Logan girls basketball team that advanced to the Class 1A semifinals saw two players named to the New Mexico High School Coaches Association’s all-state first team.
A House student who played for 1A champion Fort Sumner also was named to the first team.
One Tucumcari player made the second team in Class 3A’s all-state selections.
For the Lady Longhorns, senior guards Kyra Conway and Reece Goldston each made the Class 1A first team.
Logan finished with a 23-7 record and advanced to the state semifinals before being defeated by eventual champion Fort Sumner-House.
House senior Avery Cavett, the only player from that southern Quay County school district on the Fort Sumner squad, earned first-team honors in Class 1A.
Avery’s teammate Megan Oberg, a senior, also made the all-state first team, and another Vixen, freshman Allyssa Casaus, made the second team.
The Vixens went 21-4 and downed district rival Melrose in the 1A championship game.
For Tucumcari, junior guard Alexus Lafferty made the second team on Class 3A all-state picks.
Lafferty averaged a team-high 15.5 points per game as the Lady Rattlers finished with a 13-11 record, won their district tournament and earned a postseason berth.
The coaches association has named all-state selections since 2009. For an athlete to be chosen, the head coach first must nominate the athlete. All head coaches in each enrollment classification then are asked to rank the athletes. Teams are chosen based on the final rankings.
