1972: Tucumcari animal control officer Ralph Pharis warned he had picked up seven dead dogs that were poisoned in the southern part of the city. He said he did not know what type of poison had been used but it was fast-acting. He said parents should look over their yards and play areas and call police if they saw anything unusual.
“It is bad enough to lose a pet through this vicious means, but to have a little child get hold of something laced with poison and eat it would be unthinkable,” he said.
• Buffalo have returned to Quay County — at least temporarily. A total of 25 bison, all yearlings, were put on feed at the Worley Mills feedlot so they could be fattened for the Philmonte Boy Scout Ranch. The buffalo each weighed about 475 pounds and would be butchered by 66 Packing Co. when they reach 600 pounds.
• Southwest Motors in Tucumcari was advertising 1968 Chevrolet Impala for $1,295 and a 1965 Cadillac for $1,095. Tucumcari Motor Co. was offering a 1963 Chevrolet half-ton pickup or a 1964 Chevrolet half-ton pickup, each for $395.
• The Odeon Theatre was screening “The Little Ark,” the story of two children trapped in a church tower during a floor and the fishermen who were trying to rescue them.
