Documentary on Route 66's women to air Saturday

An eastern New Mexico public television station on Saturday will begin airing a three-part series, “Route 66: The Untold Story of Women on the Mother Road,” that includes an interview with a longtime Glenrio resident.

The documentary will begin airing at 10 a.m. Mountain time Saturday on KENW-TV in Portales. The second episode will air 10 a.m. March 13.

The director, Katrina Parks, interviewed several Texas Panhandle women for the program, including Roxann Travis of the far eastern Quay County community of Glenrio.

“The series explores how diverse women overcame gender discrimination and segregation to build fulfilling lives for themselves and generations to come on America’s most beloved road,” a news release stated. “Examining the history of Route 66 through a new diverse female lens, brings Women’s History in the American West to the forefront and sheds new light on this iconic corridor.”

The Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program was among the entities that awarded grants to Parks to help complete the documentary.
