Logan boys end regular season with non-district loss

The Logan boys basketball team concluded their regular season with a 67-34 non-district loss Saturday at Dora.

Park Strong led the Longhorns (8-17) with nine points, while Brock Burns added eight.

“We never got going offensively and struggled to score,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said. “Had some foul trouble early in the game that slowed our momentum down.”

Dora improved to 14-9 overall.

Logan is the fourth seed in this week’s District 6-A tournament. It was scheduled to host Grady in the tourney opener on Monday night. The winner was scheduled to play Tuesday the winner of the Melrose-San Jon matchup. Both games were after the Quay County Sun’s deadline.

The winner of the second-round game will go to second-seeded Fort Sumner at 6 p.m. Thursday. The winner of that clash face top-seeded Clovis Christian at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Logan 86, Grady 80 (OT)

The host Longhorns rallied in the fourth quarter to force overtime, then carried that over in the extra period during an 86-80 win over Grady in the regular-season district finale in District 6.

Burns scored 23 points to led the Longhorns, who finished fourth in the district with a 4-6 mark. Kaeden Stoner added 20 points for Logan, and Diego Sanchez scored 15.

“We had some guys step up tonight that provided us with the spark we needed,” Griffiths said. “It was a battle the entire game. Made some huge plays down the stretch just to force overtime.”

Grady fell to 7-18, 2-8.

Melrose 77, San Jon 13

San Jon concluded its regular season Thursday with at 77-13 district loss at host Melrose, the second such loss to the Buffaloes in less than a week.

The Coyotes finished the week 1-17 overall and 0-10 in the district.

Melrose finished the week at 17-7, 7-3.

Clovis Christian 54, San Jon 12

San Jon fell to the eventual District 6 champion Clovis Christian 54-12 on Wednesday.

The Eagles led 20-2 after the first quarter and held the Coyotes scoreless in the second period.

Clovis Christian finished the week 19-7, 9-1.

Melrose 63, San Jon 16

A typically strong Melrose squad had no trouble with host San Jon during a 63-16 district victory on Feb. 14.

Fort Sumner-House 2, San Jon 0 (forfeit)

San Jon forfeited its district game Feb. 15 against host Fort Sumner.

Fort Sumner-House improved to 15-3, 8-1.
