Serving the High Plains
For fresh flour tortillas, many Tucumcari residents previously had to have someone's mother or grandmother make them.
That changed earlier this month when La Tortilleria opened near the northeast corner of Fourth Street and Tucumcari Boulevard, next to the New Beginnings Nutrition store.
Six days a week, Sigifredo Rodriguez makes flour tortillas from a family recipe each morning.
"We saw an opportunity to bring something to the community," co-owner Virgina Breciado said, who also owns New Beginnings.
"We see that a lot of people go out of town to get their fresh tortillas, so it's kind of an opportunity for us and the community to have access to something like that," Saray Martinez, who is Breciado's daughter and Rodriguez's niece, said. "We know there are people who can't travel or go out of town, so this is convenient."
To help get the word out, La Tortilleria has posted information on Facebook about their tortillas in both English and Spanish.
Breciado said it sold about 90 dozen tortillas the first week.
For now, La Tortilleria only makes flour tortillas. Breciado said it may make corn tortillas later.
La Torilleria is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
