Serving the High Plains
Lizzy Horner hit two 3-pointers during a critical stretch to help lift the Logan girls basketball team to a 35-34 win over host Melrose in an important district-opening game Thursday.
Horner led the Lady Longhorns with 12 points, and Desta Rose added 11.
Logan coach Glynna Strand said her team overcame early obstacles for the win.
“We came out super slow and got down 13-2 in the first half and didn’t start playing decent until the second half and crawled our way back in,” she said.
For Melrose, Sorrell Allen, Isabelle Sena and Graci Odom each scored nine points.
Melrose, which is expected to contend for the District 6 title, fell to 7-5 overall.
Melrose plays the Lady Longhorns again at Logan on Feb. 3.
Logan 48, Texico 31
Logan extended its winning streak to seven games Saturday with a 48-31 non-district victory at Texico.
Reece Goldston led the Lady Longhorns with 15 points, and Rilee Nials added 12.
“We looked good once we figured out how to shut down their big scorer,” Strand said, “(and) we were able to get a good lead.”
Logan improved to 14-3 overall.
Texico fell to 4-8.
