1971: Frances Olson was voted the Tucumcari/Quay County Chamber of Commerce president, the first woman to hold the office. She beat Harold Ferguson and John Betts for the one-year term. The outgoing president, King Aitken Jr., said he enjoyed his tenure: “The first six months, I lost 30 pounds and gained many new friends. The last six months, I gained 30 pounds.” Bob Balch was voted first vice president and Delton Wilson second vice president.
• Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Cantrell rescued a small puppy from their trash can after hearing it bark for some time. The puppy was inside the trashcan liner, with the lid on top. The Cantrells are keeping the dog until the owner claims it or someone else adopts it.
• A Tucumcari man suffered a gash to his head when his pickup truck was struck and damaged by a Southern Pacific Railroad train at the North Rock Island Street crossing. No citations were issued.
• The Tucumcari High School wrestling team traveled to Las Vegas and earned a 45-21 victory over the Dons of West Las Vegas. The Rattlers won eight of 12 matches, including six by pin.
