NMAA realignment plan would add Ruidoso to district

A two-year realignment plan approved last week by the New Mexico Activities Association board of directors will add Ruidoso to Tucumcari’s district in many sports starting with the 2022 school year.

The Warriors of Ruidoso, previously a Class 4A school, will be folded in the Class 3A-4 with Tucumcari, New Mexico Military Institute and Dexter in basketball, volleyball and track.

Tucumcari’s enlarged football district will include Hope Christian, Ruidoso, NMMI and Dexter.

Tucumcari’s baseball and softball districts will include Dexter, East Mountain, NMMI, Ruidoso, and Sandia Prep.

The Rattlers’ District 6 boys wrestling foes will include Albuquerque Academy, Bernalillo, Del Norte, Ruidoso and Valley.

A number of Tucumcari’s current grappling district foes, including West Las Vegas, St. Michael’s, Robertson, Wingate and Newcomb, were moved into other districts.

Tucumcari girls wrestling moves into one of two districts with more than 30 schools each.

Tucumcari’s cross country district will include Cobre, Hot Springs, NMMI, Ruidoso and Socorro.

Tucumcari’s golf district will have Clovis Christian, Dexter, Jal, NMMI, Ruidoso, Tatum and Texico.

Logan and San Jon’s districts in Class 1A stayed mostly unchanged, with Grady, Melrose, Clovis Christian, Fort Sumner/House remaining their opponents.

Logan’s District 3 in eight-man football district will include Clayton (which dropped from 11-man football), Fort Sumner/House, Melrose and Tatum.

Logan softball, which didn’t field a team last season, will be in a district with Clayton, Pecos and Santa Rosa.

The NMAA board approved five enrollment classifications for all sports, except for seven in football.
