1971: Nine show dogs owned by people from the Kansas City region escaped from a van involved in a one-vehicle accident near San Jon. Police and residents helped round up the loose canines that included three miniature Schnauzers, one Basset hound, two St. Bernards, one standard Schnauzer and one Great Dane named Sinner. The dogs had been taken to shows in New Mexico and Texas. Dr. S.J. Dowds of Tucumcari Animal Hospital cared for the dogs that were mostly uninjured except for cuts and bruises while the injured driver was treated at Tucumcari Memorial Hospital.
• Police officers were trying to find the owner of an old pair of boots left at the Country Store on East Main Street in Tucumcari in place of a new pair of boots. The store’s cash register also had been emptied of $11 in bills. The break-in occurred while the store’s operator was at church.
• Tucumcari received about 1.12 inches of rain the previous day, and the year’s total stood at 18.14 inches — well above the yearly average of 14.5 inches. On the plains, the rain was reported to be beneficial for wheat but slowed maize harvests. Other totals: Jordan, 0.92 inches; McAlister, 0.90 inches; House, 0.60 inches; Forrest, 1.90 inches; Hassell, 1 inch; Ima, 0.50 inches; Grady, 2 inches; and Ragland, 1.16 inches.
