1971: The Tucumcari Open tennis tournament was scheduled for Sunday at the Damon Kvols Park tennis court. Any male age 15 and younger could enter by submitting $2 and their name for the singles competition or $3 and two names for the doubles event. Trophies would be given to first through third place. Charles E. Carter was the tournament’s director.
• The “famous” enchilada dinners offered by the Center Street United Methodist Church women was scheduled for Saturday. Dinners were $1.25 each and included three tortillas, meat sauce, cheese, onions, lettuce, pinto beans and egg if desired. Sherbet also will be served for dessert, with coffee or tea.
• The Tucumcari Public Library called attention to National Employ the Handicapped Week with a display of the library’s free services to such individuals. One of them was a talking book machine, available for use by the visually impaired.
• Quay County Extension agent Ted Peabody was given an Extension Merit Award by county commissioners George Wiegel, Otis Waterfield and Milton Terry for his 15 years of service.
