1971: Several lawmakers from the New Mexico Legislature were considering gambling to add more revenue. “We need revenue badly for our schools,” state Rep. Pete Derizotis (D-Gallup said. “We should go to some lottery type like New Jersey. We should also go to slot machines. This can be a local option.” He advocated allocating 40% of gambling revenue to schools, 20% to anti-pollution or environmental purposes and 20% to the state’s general fund.

• Cindy Henderson, a Tucumcari High School senior, was appointed state secretary of the New Mexico Young Democrats. Henderson was appointed by Silver Chavez, president of the organization, after conferring with state officials. She said one of her goals was to get more young people to register to vote and exercise that right at the polls.

• Gibson’s Discount Center was offering watermelons for 40 cents each, Sheer panty hose for 34 cents a pair, a box of Federal shotgun shells for $2.37, Cold Power laundry detergent for 67 cents a box, a can of Spam for 53 cents, a loaf of Thrif-Tee bread for 23 cents and Gladiola pouch bags of cornbread, waffle or buttermilk biscuit mix for 9 cents each.

• The New Mexico Cowbelles were scheduled to hold their midyear meeting at the Tucumcari Elks Club, with more than 150 people expected.

• The Odeon Theatre was screening “Escape from the Planet of the Apes,” the second such “Planet of the Apes” sequel.
