1971: Gov. Bruce King attended and gave a speech at the New Mexico Municipal League and Urban Renewal Association conferences in Tucumcari. The governor and his entourage arrived at Tucumcari Municipal Airport during the late morning and were greeted by Mayor Kenneth Schlientz and City Commissioner Tommy Thomas. King was given an escort to Tucumcari by city and state police in a National Guard staff car.
• The Tucumcari/Quay County Chamber of Commerce was tying up loose ends for the Pinata Festival that begins tomorrow. Much of the discussion at the chamber meeting revolved around the Pinata Queens Pageant at the junior-high school auditorium, with Miss Teenage America scheduled to attend. Admission to the pageant will be $1.50. Preparations also were being made for the annual parade.
• The Odeon Theatre was showing the Barry Newman action movie “Vanishing Point,” featuring the music of Delaney & Bonnie, Mountain, Jerry Reed, Big Mama Thornton, Doug Dillard Expedition and Kim & Dave. The Canal Drive-In was screening two Spanish language films, “Valentin De La Sierra” and “Vestidas Y Alborotadias.”
