1971: Penny Hartley of Roy was named first runner-up Saturday in the National High School Championship for Rodeo Queens in Twin Falls, Idaho. She took top honors at the pageant for horsemanship. Cindy Hagen of Grand Forks, Minnesota, was crowned queen.
• Four Tucumcari teachers will attend the annual vocational education conference for teachers at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. Attending will be John and Wanda Bush, Sue Tucek and Jimmy Speed.
• Here were the listed prices of items at a Tucumcari grocery store: cooked hams, 39 cents a pound; round steak, $1.19 a pound; ground beef, 69 cent a pound; fresh fryers, 29 cents a pound; and sliced bacon, 79 cents a pound.
• Leader Ben, a race horse owned by Virginia M. Pate of Tucumcari, won the eighth race Sunday at Santa Fe Downs by seven furlongs in a time of 1 minute, 24.3 seconds. The horse, ridden by Duane Sterling, returned $5.40, $4.40 and $3.80.
