1971: Telephone workers nationwide, including CWA representatives in Tucumcari with the Bell Telephone System, were striking for better retirement benefits, wages and working conditions. The five men on strike in front of the Bell building in Tucumcari said they were asking for a 25% pay increase over the next three years.
• A thief broke into the Sun Dance Market at the Nara Visa tourism center and stole more than $200 worth of jewelry and a typewriter. Quay County sheriff’s deputies were investigating.
• Big O Tires in Tucumcari was advertising new tires for as low as $6.99 each, installation included.
• The Odeon Theatre was showing a Disney double feature of Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” and “Boatniks.”
