1971: Jazz legend Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong died of an apparent heart attack at age 71 after his wife Lucille found him collapsed at his home, according to a United Press International report. Services were being prepared in New York City, where other musical giants such as Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Pearl Bailey, Count Basie, Guy Lombardo and Bing Crosby were scheduled to be honorary pallbearers. President Richard Nixon sent his condolences.

• Larry Havrill was name the city of Tucumcari’s new director of industrial development. He previously served as a consultant for community development for the business research center at Oklahoma City University.

• The San Jon Baptist Church was holding funeral services for Owen Albert Butler, a rancher who lived in the Bard area. Butler died from injuries two days earlier when the tractor he was driving turned over.
