Both the Logan boys and girls track teams captured district titles during a sizzling meet Thursday at Melrose and will send a total of 30 Longhorn athletes to this week’s Class 1A Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque.
The state track meet Thursday for Class 1A begins with field events at 10 a.m. and running events starting at noon. The meet will be at the University of New Mexico Track-Soccer Complex.
The Logan boys team easily won the District 6-1A meet at Melrose with 151 points, compared to runner-up Clovis Christian’s 85 points. Melrose finished third with 70 points, and San Jon totaled 29. A total of 15 Longhorns qualified for the state meet.
The Lady Longhorns edged Melrose 146-132 in total team points for the district crown. Clovis Christian finished third with 75 points, and San Jon totaled five points. A total of 15 Lady Longhorns qualified for state.
Logan coach Robert Young was impressed with how his athletes excelled despite triple-digit heat for much of the meet. According to a weather station at nearby Cannon Air Force Base, the temperature reached 103 degrees about the time the meet ended at 2:30 p.m.
“The kids did better than me,” Young said. “They stayed hydrated and out of the sun as much as possible. You could see them wearing out after the lunch break, though, but I was proud of the determination they showed.”
Logan had two athletes who were double champions in individual events. Haden Judd won the 200-meter dash and the 300-meter hurdles, and Jordan Evans won the long jump and triple jump.
Logan also piled up team points by sweeping all the relay races.

• Discus: Strong, third, 93-11 1/2.
The Coyotes of San Jon had two district champions: Chad Becerra in the javelin throw and Marvin Reece in the 110-meter hurdles race.
San Jon boys who scored points for their school at the meet were:

• 110-meter hurdles: Reece, first, 0:21.24; Tristian Reed, second, 0:21.14;
• Long jump: Becerra; third, 17-10; Reed, sixth, 13-0;
• Shot put: Reece, sixth, 29-3;
• Javelin: Becerra, first, 100-6.
Kaylee Williams took home two district championships for the Logan girls by winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Kirksey Smith also scored points for San Jon by finishing second in the javelin with an effort of 72-11 1/2.
