Logan girls dominate Relays

The Logan girls track team dominated the 11-team Ute Lake Relays at Logan on Saturday, scoring 110 points more than runner-up Clayton.

Meanwhile, Clayton edged Logan in the boys standings by a mere five points for the team title.

Tucumcari finished third in the girls leaderboard with 26 points, while the Rattler boys were last with four points.

San Jon finished eighth in the boys standings with 14 points. San Jon's girls finished ninth with seven points.

Logan coach Robert Young admitted his girls "had a great meet." Clayton finished a distant second with 36 points, compared to Logan's 153.

"We were able to get more points out of our field events than earlier in the season, which helped us in the team standings," he said.

Logan's Kaylee Williams won the 100-meter dash by more than one second (13.44 seconds), captured the 200 meters (0:29.14) and finished second in the long jump (14-7 1/2).

Hailee Robertson won the 400-meter run in 1:12.04 and pole vault (7-0) and finished fifth in the 100 (0:15.04) for the Lady Longhorns.

Logan's Natalie Bongers won the 300-meter hurdles in 0:54.84, finished second in the 100 hurdles (0:20.34) and was fifth in the discus (73-6 1/4).

Kambry Burns won the high jump (4-8) and finished second in the 200 (0.30.74) for Logan.

Reece Goldston won the javelin (80-10) and was third in the long jump (12-11).

Sierra Horne won the long jump (15-6 1/2).

Logan piled up more points by sweeping the 400-meter relay (0:51.74), 800 relay (1:59.04), 1,600 relay (4:47.74), 1,600 medley relay (5:03.84) and 3,200 relay (14:16.34).

For Tucumcari, Elena Gutierrez won the 100-meter hurdles race in 20.04.

Caylee Benavidez also was the a first-place finisher for the Lady Rattlers, with a time of 2:53.44 in the 800-meter rush, winning by four seconds.

Other girls who scored points for their teams:

• Logan's Marilyn Moreno-Cortes, third in the 100 (0:14.74) and fourth in the long jump (12-6);

• Logan's Angela Teaschner, fourth in the 100 (0:14.74) and sixth in the long jump (12-1 1/2);

• Logan's Kambry Burns, second in the 200 (0:30.74);

• Logan's Abby Paris, second in the 400 (1:15.04) and sixth in the discus (69-11);

• Logan's Bella Coronado, third in the pole vault (6-0);

• Logan's Kindal Smith, fourth in the javelin (69-4);

• San Jon's Kirksey Smith, fourth in the shot (25-8) and third in the javelin (72-5);

• Tucumcari's Iliana Reid, fifth in the shot (24-8) and third in the discus (77-0 1/4);

• Tucumcari's Izabella Reid, sixth in the shot (24-5).

In the boys competition, Young said Clayton had strong performances in several events and a great 3,200-meter relay race.

"Texico also took some points away from the boys in some of the sprints we normally have been getting," he said.

Texico finished third with 53 points.

Logan's Haden Judd won the 100-meter dash (0:12.24) and the 300-meter hurdles (0:45.64) and finished second in the 200-meter dash (0:24.64).

Logan's Jordan Evans won the long jump with a distance of 20-2 - beating his nearest rival by more than a foot - and prevailed in the triple jump (38-6 1/4).

Logan's 800-meter relay won in 1:41.14, as did its 1,600 relay (3:57.94).

San Jon's Chad Becerra captured the javelin throw with a distance of 117 feet. He also finished second in the 100-meter dash (0:12.64) and fifth in the 200 (0:25.94).

• Logan's Dante Sanchez, third in the 200 (0:24.74) and second in the 400 (0:56.74);

• Logan's Diego Sanchez, sixth in the 200 (0:27.04);

• Logan's Christian Kotara, third in the 400 (0:58.24);

• Logan's Payson Nials, fifth in the 400 (1:01.74);

• Logan's Brock Burns, sixth in the 400 (1:03.14);

• Logan's 3,200 relay, third (11:31.94);

• Logan's 1,600 medley relay, second (4:49.84);

• Logan's Brock Burns, second in the high jump (5-4);

• Logan's Park Strong, second in the shot put (35-7) and fifth in the javelin (93-6);

• Tucumcari's Andrew Henderson-Clark, sixth in the triple jump (31-7 1/2) and fourth in the javelin (97-9).

Logan's next event will be the district meet Thursday at Melrose, which determines who will go the Class 1A state meet June 17 at Albuquerque. The district event previously had been scheduled at Fort Sumner, but the school district canceled spring sports due to a COVID-19 outbreak there.

Tucumcari will go to Santa Rosa on Saturday for its district meet.

Santa Rosa Invite

Manny Hernandez won the boys 3,200-meter run to become the lone first-place winner for Tucumcari during the 11-team Santa Rosa Invitational on Friday.

Hernandez finished with a time of 13 minutes, 4.04 seconds, beating runner-up Juaquin Baca of Santa Rosa by 21 seconds.

Hernandez also finished sixth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:49.24.

Tucumcari's Khobie Salvador, who'd dominated the shot and discus events in recent weeks, injured his elbow and didn't compete in the discus Friday, nor did he compete in the following day's Ute Lake Relays.

The Tucumcari boys finished ninth with 18 points. Santa Rosa breezed to the team title with 135 points.

The Tucumcari girls finished sixth with 36 points. Pecos won with 104 points.

Other Tucumcari athletes who scored team points:

• Delilah Acosta, second in both the girls discus and shot put with distances of 84 feet and 27-3 3/4 respectively;

• Iliana Reid, fourth in the girls discus at 72-10;

• The girls 1,600-meter relay, second in a time of 4:51.44;

• The girls 800 relay, second in a time of 2:02.14;

• The girls 400 relay, fourth in a time of 0:58.84;

• Will Norton, second in the boys discus at 103-4;

• Salvador, second in the boys shot at 30-3.
