The Logan girls basketball team fended off a challenge from Clovis Christian during a 50-44 victory in both teams’ season opener Saturday.
Kambry Burns led the Lady Longhorns with 13 points. Karlee Cantrell added 12 points and Kyra Conway 11.
Logan had a 30-22 lead at intermission, but the Eagles made a 15-9 run in the third quarter to tighten the game.
The Lady Longhorns went 5-of-8 from the free-throw line in the final period to preserve their lead and the win. Conway also made two key 3-pointers during the period.
“(Clovis Christian) are pretty good, but the refs took us out of our game,” Logan coach Glynna Strand said. “Foul count at one point was 13-4, and two of my starters sat the bench the entire game.
“Key at the end was shot selection, staying poised and free throws,” she added.
Sofia DeGroot scored a team-leading 19 points for the Eagles. Older sister Lola DeGroot had 17 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots.
Roy 60, San Jon 37
Roy held San Jon scoreless during the first quarter, which proved decisive in a 60-37 victory Thursday for the host Longhorns in both teams’ season-openers.
Roy had a 16-0 lead after one period and 25-7 at intermission.
Karlee Elliott led the Coyotes with seven points, while Nataya Archuleta and Chantzee Elliott each scored five.
“The girls played exceptional defense tonight,” San Jon coach Jaree Elliott said. “We couldn’t buy a bucket in the first half, but our shots started falling in the second. We struggled rebounding in the first half, as well, but did much better in the second half, which got us several putbacks.
“Roy/Mosquero is a very physical and well-coached team who moves the ball well and takes it to the hole. I felt like my girls competed well with them, and I was very proud of our defense.”
Riley Clavel scored a game-high 26 points for the Longhorns.
