Logan lost its season-opening road game Friday night against eight-man football rival Melrose.
Worse yet, the Longhorns lost two starters for probably at least one game because of injuries.
The defending state champion and host Buffaloes scored 26 unanswered points en route to the 48-12 victory.
Logan quarterback Wyatt Wright and running back Jordan Evans suffered concussions and were taken to a Clovis hospital. Both will have to sit out at least 10 days due to the New Mexico Activities Association's concussion protocol.
"It was a good game until the fourth quarter, when I lost my starting quarterback and my starting running back," Logan coach Dwayne Roberts said. "It went south after that."
Wright scored a touchdown on a 3-yard rushing attempt early in the game. Wright finished 5-of-9 passing for 81 yards.
In the fourth quarter, Dante Sanchez threw at 55-yard touchdown pass to Christian Kotara in the fourth quarter. Sanchez finished 2-for-10 passing for 58 yards and the TD.
Melrose totaled 485 yards of offense, compared to 120 for Logan. The Longhorns struggled with its rushing game, finishing minus-19 yards in 22 carries.
For Melrose, Tate Sorgen rushed for 218 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. Sorgen also went 9-for-16 passing for 215 yards and four touchdowns. Devon Bailey caught four passes for 136 yards.
Because Curry County was in the yellow zone in COVID-19 risk, outdoor sports venues were allowed only 25% capacity for spectators. The Logan school district on Friday morning sent over several texts informing parents about the protocols for the game.
