Logan Municipal Schools on Saturday became the fourth school district in Quay County to have in-person classes disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.
The district stated in a text message Saturday afternoon to parents and students that Logan schools will go entirely to online classes starting Monday through Dec. 18 “due to a COVID case on campus.”
The district’s Facebook page later stated the case was confirmed Saturday.
The Tucumcari, San Jon and House school districts in the county last last month converted from a hybrid model of teaching to all-online learning because of rising COVID-19 cases in the region or coronavirus cases reported within the district itself.
Quay County had seen 140 confirmed cases of coronavirus in November and 35 more in the first six days of December.
The Logan school district stated on its Facebook page that details about distributing learning devices and learning materials to students from kindergarten through fifth grades would be announced Monday.
Logan students eligible for free or reduced-price meals during the remote-learning period can pick them up from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. daily at the district’s west cafeteria doors.
Logan school board members during a special meeting Nov. 30 discussed the possibility of going entirely to online classes, citing a possible higher risk of virus transmission during Thanksgiving and upcoming Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
Board members declined such action, voicing a preference to keep elementary children in in-person teaching for as long as possible. Middle-school and high-school students at Logan, as with many other districts in New Mexico, had been in remote learning since the beginning of the school year.
The board likely will revisit the issue during its next scheduled meeting Dec. 14.
