1970: A 23-year-old Tucumcari man died in a one-car accident 32 miles east of Las Vegas in San Miguel County. The driver failed to negotiate a curve, lost control and flipped his car, throwing him and a passenger from the vehicle near the post office in Trujillo. The passenger was taken to a Las Vegas hospital, then transferred to St. Vincents Hospital in Santa Fe with head injuries.
• The Tucumcari-Quay County Chamber of Commerce elected its new board of directors: Craig Currell, Harold Ferguson, Norm Wegner, King Aitken, George Weigel, Dale Felkner, Stanley Frost, Joe Ploesner, Sam Shami, John Betts, Bill Coe, Victory Worley, Don Long, Barton Jones, E.J. Brown, Don Welborn, Bob Cooper and Dorothy Kvols.
• The Western Auto Associate Store at 121 E. Main St. in Tucumcari announced its grand opening under its new owners, Delton and Zo Wilson. It advertised a variety of items and toys for the Christmas season, including a Monopoly board game for $3.59.
