1970: Bruce King, a rancher from Stanley and former speaker of the New Mexico House of Representatives, won the governor’s seat by defeating Pete Domenici, a Republican, by nearly 12,000 votes. Democrats also won many other state races during the election. The only Republican to win was incumbent Manuel Lujan Jr. for the northern congressional seat. In Washington, Democrats retained control of both the House and Senate.
• Tucumcari Mayor Kenneth Schlientz officially proclaimed Nov. 6 to be Tucumcari Rattlers Day.
• The Oscar-nominated film “M*A*S*H” was showing at the Odeon Theatre in Tucumcari. “M*A*S*H” begins where other anti-war films end,” one blurb stated.
