School nutrition grants awarded to Tucumcari, Logan, House

The New Mexico Public Education Department announced Wednesday it awarded school nutrition grants to the Tucumcari, Logan and House school districts to expand programs to buy food directly from local farmers, food hubs or cooperatives and distributors.

These grants were announced for Quay County school districts:

• Tucumcari Public Schools, $4,983;

• Logan Municipal Schools, $1,661;

• House Municipal Schools, $623.

A total of 53 grants totaling $332,000 were awarded to school districts across the state. The Student Success and Wellness Bureau’s goal is to ensure New Mexico children access to high-quality, healthful school meals.

In the 2020-2021 school year, 25% of the state’s school districts — serving more than 183,000 students daily — are purchasing locally grown fruits and vegetables for their student nutrition programs through the New Mexico Grown Program.
