The New Mexico Activities Association announced Wednesday afternoon to all member schools that all sports events scheduled for Saturday would be canceled, citing the state's current public health order.
“The NMAA is awaiting approval from the Governor’s office before decisions regarding next week’s events will be made,” it stated on its social media pages.
The decision affected several Saturday volleyball games for Quay County schools, including home openers for Logan and San Jon and a road game at Pecos for Tucumcari.
Tucumcari's boys and girls cross country teams also had been scheduled to participate in a meet Saturday at Mora.
Tucumcari's athletic director, Wayne Ferguson, said during a school board meeting two weeks ago he and other athletic directors around the state had suspected volleyball season would not start on time because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
New Mexico has seen a sharp upsurge in coronavirus in recent weeks, including 426 confirmed cases Thursday. That was the highest number of cases in the state since July. The pandemic has killed almost 900 people in New Mexico and more than 211,000 in the United States.
