San Jon not charging for home games

Mindful of COVID-19 public health regulations, San Jon Municipal Schools won’t charge admission for at least the first few home volleyball games.

The district’s school board decided during its Sept. 14 meeting to use an “in-kind” donation system for all athletic events and not charge money at the gate. The New Mexico Public Education Department is discouraging the “exchange of monies” because of the pandemic.

Superintendent Janet Gladu said donations would be taken in a jar or bucket. Donations would be taken near the same area where temperature screenings would be taken of spectators before admission, if such screenings still are required when the season begins.

The school board will revisit the policy at each of its monthly meetings, especially if health restrictions are eased.

The Coyotes’ first home volleyball game is Oct. 10 against Mosquero. The San Jon sports program is starting its first season on its own since ending its cooperative agreement with Grady in December.

In other business:

• The board will revisit school re-entry guidelines monthly and continue with its current setup until its next meeting in mid-October. San Jon will continue teaching prekindergarten through third grade in groups of a 5-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio on campus as well as students with specialized needs having an option for in-person learning. Remaining students will continue with online instruction.

Gladu said If the PED drastically changes current re-entry guidelines, the board may hold a special meeting to discuss that.

• The Ed Lee gymnasium will be in October to redo its floors.

• The board approved a new attendance policy to align with state law.
